Career
Introduction to School of Life Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University
The School of Life Sciences (SLS) at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), formerly the Department of Biology, was founded in 1924, making it one of the oldest biology departments in China. Equipped with excellent teaching and research facilities, SLS has expanded its research scope to encompass both traditional and cutting-edge areas in biology, including cell and molecular biology, ecology and evolutionary biology, and interdisciplinary investigations in the life sciences.
Currently, SLS prioritizes two core areas: "life and health" and "bioresource security." Aligned with these priorities, the school focuses on diverse research fields such as life omics, immunology and aging, microbial intelligence and biocontrol, animal health and safety in aquaculture and livestock farming, and plant stress biology. Several research areas at SLS, such as molecular biology and genetics, and biology and biochemistry, are ranked among the top 0.1% of global universities by Essential Science Indicators (ESI), while botany and zoology are ranked among the top 1%.
School of Life Sciences Building in Guangzhou South Campus
SLS hosts over ten key research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Biocontrol, the China-ASEAN Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Mariculture Technology, the South China Branch Center of the National Center of Technology Innovation for Pigs, the Key Laboratory of Gene Function and Regulation of the Ministry of Education (MOE), and the National Biological Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (Sun Yat-sen University). These platforms empower SLS researchers to achieve top-quality academic accomplishments on the world stage. In recent years, SLS has focused on establishing an "International Frontier Excellence Innovation Platform for Life Sciences," creating five major professional platforms, including aquatic animal breeding and plant-insect-ecology, and six large-scale instrument platforms, encompassing cell function analysis and imaging, and protein preparation and identification. These platforms facilitate high-level scientific research and provide a fertile ground for cultivating young talents in the life sciences.

Currently, SLS has over 140 faculty members, including an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and an Academician of Academia Sinica (Taiwan, China). Over the past decades, SLS has nurtured numerous outstanding alumni who contribute significantly to relevant fields in both academic and non-academic positions worldwide. Situated in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, SLS is committed to building a world-class educational and research hub for life sciences, dedicated to serving the needs of human health and agricultural security in China and globally.
